Adios, NZ

December 19, 2017July 21, 2018 By 2 Smiths

We’ve started our way home today. Our flight from Christchurch to Sydney isn’t until later in the day so our hosts at the cottage are letting us store our luggage at their home for a few hours.

The morning is pretty much a walk-about – checking out some of the special street art and exhibits and people-watching. After lunch we rode on the tourist trolley which makes a circular route around the CBD and historic areas. Even though we had walked the route many times, it was interesting to hear the commentary on the buildings & where things are going. Lots and lots of construction work going on.

A final beer & wine at Pomeroy’s and we’re off to the airport and a late arrival in Sydney where we’ll spend the night near the airport before our flight back to the States in the morning.

It’s hard to believe that we are really leaving to head towards home, but it is time. We have a late flight out of Christchurch to Sydney, so we have until 4:00 to do final sightseeing before our Uber driver collects us.

We walked further afield today, widening the band around the city. We had lunch at O.G.B. and decided to ride the tourist trolley around the city a few times. It was nice to hear commentary about the buildings (or holes in the ground) to put some perspective on things we have been walking past the last few days. We also paid a visit to the 185 Chairs, an impromptu memorial to those whose lives were lost.

It is apparent that the people here are looking to the future and not back at the past. I would love to return in ten years and see the progress they will have made. I wish them well.

Mary

Hey – it’s us!

As the two of us have travelled over the years we’ve tried to keep a blog going (mainly so we can remember what the heck we did!).  It’s been good fun and a great way to hold on to special memories.
