Puligny-Montrachet

August 30, 2018August 31, 2018 By 2 Smiths

Today is a day to enjoy the village with harvest in full swing. We have a lovely breakfast at our hotel, all prepared by Suzanne – the owner. So many food options to choose from, but I stick with the yogurt with fresh raspberries, baked peaches and a croissant with house made marmalade.

We have several tours this morning. First is a walking vineyard tour with Lea of Olivier Laflaive. We spend several hours in the vineyards, learning about horticulture, watching the picking of the grapes and learning about the classification designations.

Lea then turns us over to the owner himself Monsieur Laflaive and he takes us on a tour and tasting of the production operation (in full swing) and the cellar rooms. They started harvest just last Friday, so things are lively.
We have a nice snack at Enimeste, a simple salad of lettuce, fresh tomatoes and very fresh mozzarella cheese with balsamic and olive oil.

A small tour to the castle at Rochepot, and some quiet time. A lovely dinner at Le Montrachet. We split a Langoustine appetizer and then the famous Bresse chicken prepared two ways; the breast sautéed with some summer vegetables and then the thigh meat and fois gras wrapped in a cabbage leaf with the most amazing broth ever. We splurged on dessert, chocolate and coconut for me and ice cream and sorbet mix for Dick. Plus, a lovely bottle of White Burgundy with the meal. I need a nap!

It’s harvest time in the Côte de Beaune!

Our hostess Suzanne at the ‘Hotel la Chouette’ recommended a vineyard and wine cave tour which the Olivier Leflaive Winery runs. It’s a fun tour – a young lady led the vineyard tour and Monsieur Leflaive himself guides the tour of the winery itself. Things are pretty lively as the harvest is in full swing. Leflaive has 100+ seasonal ‘pickers’ onsite and it’s non-stop action in the winery.

Later in the day we took a drive uphill to the 12th-century Burgundian castle ‘Château de La Rochepot’ which overlooks the village of Rochepot and the wine valleys below. A short walk from our hotel is the restaurant ‘Le Montrachet’. Top notch.

Hey – it’s us!

As the two of us have travelled over the years we’ve tried to keep a blog going (mainly so we can remember what the heck we did!).  It’s been good fun and a great way to hold on to special memories.
