Cezanne Countryside

September 5, 2018 By 2 Smiths

Another grocery experience this morning!  Interesting stuff happens when a hungry guy gets grocery duty.  In addition to the shopping list (coffee, fruit, crackers & balsamic vinegar) we end up adding tuna, ‘cassoulet du canard’, sausage, baguette, eclair, & ‘3 Monts Biere’ (!!!!!).

Wine tour today. Leo, the guide whom we commissioned through the Aix tourist bureau, took a scenic route along the ‘Cezanne Road’ to the foot of the Sainte-Victoire mountain which was the source of inspiration for much of his work.  Spectacular views over the valley which comprises the Cote de’ Provence AOC.  We visited two wineries – one, relatively new but well respected; the 2nd being one of the oldest in Provence.

Aix is loaded with great restaurants.  We ventured a little deeper into the old quarters this evening to check out a pizza (NOT americano) place recommended by some of our fellow wine touring friends.   Good stuff.

Great wine tour today with our guide Leo. We are accompanied by a couple from Houston, Texas and another couple from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.  All good folks.  The wine tour winds through the mountains outside of Aix along the route that Cezanne took to paint the mountain outside of Saint Victor.   We stop at 2 wineries, one – of the newest in the Cote de Provence appellation, and one of the oldest in same.  Provence is, of course, home of Rose, but they have a few vin de Rouge that are notable as well. Good fun.

After we have a light snack at the apartment, Dick goes to the grocery store – no comment, but he mainly returns with what was on the list.

Walkabout later, then to the old quarter to get a pizza at DaVito – highly recommended by the Texas couple on our wine tour.  We start with an excellent bruschetta, and then wait… after an hour or so, Dick asks about the pizza we had ordered – much commotion, but it arrives in 2 minutes, very good, and not anything we would have gotten in the states.

We finish the night at Le Novo. It has for now become the defacto spot for a nightcap on the way home.  The very strange, but nice, owner spots us for two drinks tonight.  I think that might be the first time ever in France.

Hey – it’s us!

As the two of us have travelled over the years we’ve tried to keep a blog going (mainly so we can remember what the heck we did!).  It’s been good fun and a great way to hold on to special memories.
