After a great breakfast , we headed out for our morning rock art drive with our guide Niel. Niel is of Afrikaner descent and hails from the far northeast of South Africa.
We have Niel to ourselves and he leads us on an easy walk over two dry river crossings to one the most famous sites in the region – ‘Fallen Rock’.
The Fallen Rock shelter is named for the fallen slab of rock at one end of the cave. The art at the site depicts various shaman rituals. The central figure in the cave Is a classic representation of a trance state. Another notable painting at the site is a strange grouping – an older elephant picture and a more recent (6,000 years old) depiction of a camp of San in a cave. We explored the cave and nearby rocks for some 2 hours.
In addition to its fame as a rock art location, ‘Bushman’s Kloof’ is a well-regarded ‘wellness retreat’ and offers a variety of spa treatments. We scheduled an afternoon ‘couples full body massage’. First time for Dick. You almost wanted to take a nap afterwards.
Part of our package was a picnic lunch but the winds were pretty fierce – strong enough to blow table settings away! Prudence dictated we cancel the outdoor lunch.
In the evening, we went on a game drive with Niel and stopped for the traditional ‘sundowner’ before heading back to camp’. Along the route were ostrich, red wildebeest, springbock, a large group of Cape Mountain Zebras, and baboon.
For dinner, we had scheduled a private ‘Walled Garden’ dinner. Alas, due to the incessant high winds we decided to dine in the regular dining room. Later we sat on our veranda admiring the views and later the moonlight over the pond with some adult beverages.
