Galapagos – Floreana

October 23, 2019November 20, 2019 By 2 Smiths

Morning options for the day were a trip to Floreana Island to check out the “post office” and spend the morning snorkeling or sitting on the beach.  I elected to stay on the boat and have some quiet time.  After lunch, Abbi and I took the glass bottom boat and explored one of the coves.  Amazing amounts of starfish and schools of sardines.  Afterwards there was a short hike to look at some Flamingos.  Very nice.

Later in the evening we made sure to say goodbye to some of the special crew – Paul our naturalist and Felipe the bartender (a VIP for sure).   Diego, our cabin mate has outdone himself with towel art this evening and has also left a special thanks in chocolate.  Love his sense of humor!

An interesting day on Floreana Island.  I joined the group going for the deep water snorkeling in the morning.  Wow!  I finally got my fin legs and had a blast.  Huge schools of tiny fish swarmed around us the whole route.  Innumerable larger, beautiful fish & starfish everywhere. Best of all, sea lions followed and spun around me for a few hundred yards – 3 juveniles and a really FAT male.  They seemed very curious.

Later we landed at Post Office Bay to visit the historic barrel that has served as a post office for the island for over 2 centuries.  The barrel was constructed in the late 1700’s for passers-by to maintain contact with the US and Europe.  It’s a tradition to drop mail in the slot for free delivery as whalers did centuries ago.  A hike took us north of Post Office Bay to Punta Cormorant, a steep lava cone.  Awesome views.

Hey – it’s us!

As the two of us have travelled over the years we’ve tried to keep a blog going (mainly so we can remember what the heck we did!).  It’s been good fun and a great way to hold on to special memories.
