Galapagos – Isabela Island

By 2 Smiths

Our morning stop is at Urbina Bay on Isabela.  It’s a ‘wet stop’ which is always amusing with seniors involved but all handled well.  The path starts at the beach and runs through sand, pumice, and coral in a coastal area.

In the afternoon, we head to Tagus Cove, also on Isabella.  First up for some is a kayak excursion along the coast.  Beautiful coastline and water with turtles and tons of waterbirds.  A couple of the guys came across penguins, but not me, alas.  Later in the afternoon we took a panga from ship & walked steep paths to top of trail with great views of Darwin Lake & Ocean.  Along the way graffiti viewed with names & dates of older ship visits, including pirates.  Oldest was 1836.   Very cool!

Overnight we transited to Urbina Bay (on Isabela Island).  After breakfast, we have another ‘wet’ landing to take a hike.  Yesterday was all about marine iguanas, today is about land iguanas.  They are quite prolific on this part of the island.  We also see a giant domed tortoise, our first of the trip.  After several hours we go head back to the boat for lunch.  Dale has arranged for us to tour the bridge and talk to the captain – very cool.

The afternoon activity is kayaking, I choose to refrain, but Dick heads out.  Afternoon choices are a hike or a coastal exploration by panga.    It sounded like the wildlife viewing would be limited on the hike, so I decide to take the panga.  I’m glad I did, many opportunities to see the blue-footed booby and got to see the little penguins!  Awesome.
