We had nothing major planned for today so it’s catch up with chores and get some shopping out of the way.
The largest of Aix’ street market is just two blocks away and happens a couple of times each week. Fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and meats – it’s a fun scene to observe and we’ve made it a point to wander through whenever it’s held. On my first run through the market a few weeks ago I spotted a small food truck selling freshly made crepes but was short on time so I didn’t try one. We finally spotted the vendor today and tried one of the gal’s strawberry jam crepes. Whew – pretty good and a fun process to observe. Some great ham and fruits completed our market run.
Later, we stopped at the local Monoprix store for a few items. The gal checking us out remembered us from a visit last week – she’s from Orange County and settled here after attending college in the city. Tonight is the night we decided to follow up on a recipe I found online for ‘Cassoulet de Canard’. I picked up a can of the prepared cassoulet a few weeks ago and have been itching to give it a go. The cassoulet was good, but the salad is better. It was worth a try!

For whatever reason, today is just a lazy day, that is the joy of just finding a place to park for a month. The market beckons yet again. Even though the market is 3 days a week, it is different every time. Some vendors are there every time, some only once or twice and the offerings change due to the seasons. We are getting to know the vendors and who has the best of whatever we are looking for.
We have some specific things we want to get this time, some Jambon from the one charcuterie person, fresh fruit and tomatoes, and a demi baguette. We also need to do a run to the grocery store for yogurt, orange juice and the like. The peaches are still in season, not for much longer, so we get some more of those. The melons, not sure what kind, don’t look like cantaloupe but they have a deep orange flesh, are in season and we finally succumb to buying one. We want to buy some fresh figs, they are in season right now, but you can’t just buy a couple. Maybe in a day or two.
Whilst perusing the local wares, Dick spies the girl selling crepes. He’s been looking for her for a week or more, but we haven’t seen her. Turns out, she is only there on Tuesdays. We decide to split a freshly made crepe with her homemade Strawberry preserves, it was great – too bad, no picture. It is truly a wonder to see someone make a professional crepe, very elegant.
Get our Monoprix and wine store run in as well, then back to the apartment because some laundry needs to be done. A lazy day, hanging out and thinking about more things to do.
Dick is preparing a Cassoulet au Canard this evening, I’m running sous chef on the salad and rice. Nice dinner on the terrace with some of the wine we bought yesterday.
