Cezanne & Old Aix

September 13, 2018September 13, 2018 By 2 Smiths

It is such a joy to have the market outside our door 3 days a week. We have been eyeing the eggs for the last week and decide they will be perfect for an omelet in the near future. Fresh off the chicken, they are 1.4 Euro for six, a steal. We pick up more lettuce and fresh fruit for breakfast and then it’s back home to eat.

I throw the towels in the wash and we set off for the Cezanne Atelier. Uber was an interesting option, the driver was very nice, but she spoke zero English. We still managed to communicate and have an entertaining ride.

The Atelier is very small, after Cezannes parents died, he needed to sell his childhood home. He found this small plot of land in what was considered rural Aix and built his home, studio and gardens, on quite the pleasant spot.

We walked back to town and found ourselves in one of the small squares. The Cathedral St. Sauveur has been on our list and we find ourselves there unexpectedly. It’s a beautiful cathedral, with many stained-glass windows, painted friezes, and ornate fixtures dating back to the early 1st century for parts of the cathedral through the 15th century for the last.

We wandered home through the side streets of old town. We found this great place selling fresh Madeleines, of course need to try those. Coincidentally, we also passed by the wonderful macaron place and we choose to replenish our supply. Not feeling like going out for a big meal, we decided to use some of those eggs and have an omelet for dinner.’

After a quick run by the city market for provisions we head out to check off some of the Aix tourista stuff today.

Thus far, we’ve been able to walk to most of the city’s attractions. For the first time we decided to give Uber a go today as our first stop is the ‘L’Atelier de Cezanne’ (Cezannes’ studio) in the hills above Aix. The pickup is easy but our conversation with the driver is tough as our Jocelyne (from Paris) speaks worse English than we speak French. Aix city traffic is crazy due to the construction, but we’re still happy we decided not to walk (a long uphill).

The museum is in Cezannes’ studio. It’s small, but interesting, with many of the subjects of his work on display. The grounds and siting of the property are great.

An easy walk from the studio (easy because it is downhill!) took us to the historic city center and we stumbled across the ‘Cathedral St. Sauveur’. Magnificent. It’s a nice ramble through the old town to our apartment.

Back at the ranch, Mary prepares an omelet from the day’s hunting and we enjoy a pleasant evening on the balcony.

Hey – it’s us!

As the two of us have travelled over the years we’ve tried to keep a blog going (mainly so we can remember what the heck we did!).  It’s been good fun and a great way to hold on to special memories.
