Not much on the schedule for today excepting some wandering around lovely Dornoch.
Don and Joyce head out early while Mary and I try to catch up with our very tardy blog. We’ve been in quite a few places with marginal (if any) WIFI which has really slowed down our progress. Oh well.
Mid-morning Mary & I head out for a walk around town. We stopped in a the Dornoch Cathedral, built in the early 1200’s. Just around the corner is the birthplace of the famous golf architect Donald Ross. There is an odd section of dead grass just to the right of the doorway blamed on visitor mischief a few years ago (Bill King – if you end up reading this you should know they have video!).
During our travels we’ve seen quite a few vehicles with a small sign marked ‘L’ in windows and on dashboards. Wondering if they were designating ‘Lyft’ or some other shared ride service I did a Google search to see if we could hire one for a ride out of town. Nope, not uber-like. The ‘L’ stands for ‘learner’. Big difference but we guessed they’d be cheap!
Not far from the famous Royal Dornoch golf course is the ‘Witches Stone’ located where the last witch was burned in Scotland in 1727. Sad story. A less depressing story is that of the Dornoch Jail, now a high end set of shops. It’s worth reading the story of the jail (pages 8-10) on the following link: Castle & Jail History . Cracks me up!
We met up with Don & Joyce at back at the Cathedral where a formal ‘Proclamation of the Ascension’ declaring King Charles as such was read by a local dignitary. At the end of the ceremony the crowd chanted ‘Love live the King’ – punctuated perfectly by a single dog bark. Brilliant!
Dinner at the Royal Hotel for we four and a dram at the famous Castle Hotel whisky bar – the scene of a legendary and priceless event which occurred during a golf trip in 2018.
