It’s a lazy Sunday in Aix.
After a late breakfast we headed out to run errands and after hearing the distant sound of drums ventured down to the main drag, Cours Mirabeau. Cours Mirabeau is the city’s hub and is often the scene of markets, demonstrations, etc. Today it turns out is ‘Assogora 2018’ – a festival showcasing local volunteer and civic organizations. There are some 400 booths set up and it’s quite a spectacle with dancing, drum bands, and barkers. Very tight security (interesting, but wise considering the world we live in).
Mary suggests a table overlooking the fun at ‘Les Deux Garcons’, supposedly run by the mob, for a snack & wine. Great views and no one got whacked while we dined.

Started the day at the Boulangerie this morning to get the croissants for breakfast and a baguette for dinner later. After a quiet breakfast on the terrace, I did some house cleaning (the one downside of renting an apartment, you must clean it at some point).
We venture out a little after noon to run a couple of errands and are drawn by the sound of drums near the Cours Mirabeau. At first, I thought there was a parade with a marching band. But no, we have stumbled onto one of the many street festivals that happen regularly in Aix. Many civic organizations are present but overall it seemed themed toward music and dance. I must admit it is the first time I ever saw belly dancing to hip hop music. There were demonstrations of swing, Latin salsa, belly dancing, even the hula and many more. Also, a young lady performing aerial acrobatics and multiple percussion performances.
We stop at the famous Les Deux Garcons for a drink and people watching. A quite renowned Aix institution dating back to 1792. It is said Paul Cézanne and Émile Zola used to meet every afternoon at this place.
A nice unexpected interlude to the day.
